Meet Thomas: From the Lab Book to the Logbook

For me, the sound of a clicking freehub (is there a better sound than a freehub check?) and the data on a laboratory screen have always spoken the same language.

My journey into coaching wasn’t a typical one. It began in the research labs of the University of Basel, where I earned my Ph.D. immersed in the world of biomedical sciences and complex data analysis. I spent years learning how the human body functions at a cellular level and developing the next generation of diagnostics. But while my days were spent in science, my heart was always on the road.

I founded ESQ Coaching because I realized that many endurance athletes were either training by "feel" alone or drowning in data they didn't know how to use. I wanted to change that. I believe that every athlete—whether you’re preparing for your first century or aiming for a podium—deserves a training plan rooted in evidence, not guesswork.

Beyond the Data While I love a good power curve, I know that coaching is about more than just numbers. It’s about the human being on the bike. As the chairman of the global J&J Virtual Cycling Club and a supporter of Cycling for Children, I’ve seen firsthand how cycling builds community and changes lives. My philosophy is built on three pillars:

  • Scientific Precision: Using my biomedical background to ensure every interval has a purpose.
  • Mental Resilience: Training your mind to be as strong as your legs when the climb gets steep.
  • Inclusivity & Ethics: Creating a supportive space where everyone, regardless of their starting point, feels they belong.

When I’m not analyzing ride files or working on health care science, you’ll find me out on the road, testing my own limits and practicing what I preach. I don't just want to be the person who sends you a calendar of workouts; I want to be the mentor who helps you understand your body, find your edge, and truly enjoy the journey to your personal best.

I’m thrilled to have you as part of this community. Let’s see what we can achieve together.

Welcome to the Family
